Influenza vaccines at MY Medical Clinic

Currently, MY Medical Clinic has three locations, in Shibuya, Otemachi, and Yokohama Minatomirai, and influenza vaccination services are available at all three locations.
The Shibuya Clinic was opened in November 2015 and is used by people who live in the Shibuya area or often come to Shibuya.
Influenza vaccination services have been provided since 2016, so you can get your vaccinations at our clinic.
In order to make it easy for people outside of Shibuya-ku to get vaccinated against influenza, we are deploying a roving influenza vaccination service, which has made vaccinations available to more people.
In addition to our Shibuya Clinic, we have a clinic in Otemachi, one of Japan’s leading business districts.
As at our Shibuya Clinic, many business people use MY Medical Clinic Otemachi to get various vaccinations, including the influenza vaccination.
We also opened a clinic in Minatomirai in 2022.
We hope that the character of Minatomirai as a leading tourist spot in Kanagawa Prefecture and a business base representing Yokohama will make it possible for a wide range of people to visit our clinic to receive influenza vaccinations. MY Medical Clinic Yokohama Minatomirai is also directly connected to Minatomirai Station and offers easy access for busy business persons.
Please use one of our three MY Medical Clinics in Shibuya, Otemachi, or Yokohama Minatomirai to get your influenza vaccinations.

Characteristics of influenza

Influenza is characterized by rapid onset of symptoms such as fever of 38°C or higher, headache, arthralgia, myalgia, and general malaise. In general, the symptoms are similar to those of the common cold and include sore throat, runny nose, and cough. People of any age with chronic respiratory, cardiovascular, or kidney disease or compromised immune function may be more susceptible to secondary bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, which increases the risk of their illness becoming more severe.

Necessity of influenza vaccinations

  • ■Necessity of influenza vaccinations

Effects of vaccination include direct effects on vaccinated individuals and indirect effects that confer immunity to most of the population (herd immunity) and prevent the spread of infection.
We all need to continue being mindful of our vaccinations against both the COVID-19 and influenza virus, especially in the winter season. Taking group infection control measures against both viruses helps to minimize absences from fever and poor physical condition. This is necessary from the standpoint of protecting the health of employees and maintaining the functions of the company as a whole.

About influenza vaccinations

1

Effects of influenza vaccination

Influenza viruses infect the body by invading and proliferating through the mucous membranes of the mouth, nose, or eyes, and the disease becomes symptomatic after the incubation period.
Vaccines cannot always be expected to prevent the onset of illness, but their most important effect is to prevent the aggravation of pneumonia and encephalopathy.

2

Vaccine used

The influenza vaccine now widely used in Japan is a “quadrivalent vaccine,” which is produced by culturing 2 strains each of influenza A strain and influenza B strain, a total of 4 strains in each culture.

3

Optimal timing for influenza vaccination

In Japan, it is desirable to administer the vaccine by the middle of December because the epidemic will spread from December to April every year and the peak will be reached from January to early March.

4

Number of doses

As a general rule, a single dose is administered to persons aged 13 years or older.
Some package inserts for the vaccine state: “Administer 1 or 2 doses to persons aged 13 years or older”, but in studies in healthy adults and persons with chronic diseases, the results showed that a single injection of 0.5 mL can obtain an antibody titer equivalent to that of 2 doses.

5

Prevalence of influenza in recent years

In Australia, there are signs that this year’s influenza epidemic will be the largest in the past 5 years.
Australia is located in the southern hemisphere, and because winter comes there in what is the summer season in Japan, epidemics in Australia occur in the June to September period. There is a correlation between the numbers of people infected each year in Japan and Australia. Based on data from countries in the Southern Hemisphere, we can predict what strains will become epidemic and get a sense of the scale of infection.
For the above reasons, it is highly likely that influenza will become epidemic in Japan this year, and because there have been no global influenza epidemics in recent years, immunity against influenza can be expected to have decreased. Accordingly, there is concern that the risk of the disease becoming severe will be higher this year than in the average year.
Vaccines cannot always be expected to prevent the onset of illness, but their most important effect is to prevent the aggravation of pneumonia and encephalopathy.

As described above, the experience of countries like Australia in the Southern Hemisphere shows us what countries like Japan in the Northern Hemisphere can expect, and influenza is now reported to be epidemic in the Southern Hemisphere.
